Information Design

Project Overview

This project was to understand the security implications of IoT (Internet of Things) devices is essential for protecting user privacy and managing access controls. Our team developed an app that bridges the perspectives of both consumers and manufacturers through customizable IoT security labels. My role involved designing the label itself, which would be generated through the app and applied to devices. Before beginning the design process, we conducted extensive secondary research on existing IoT devices worldwide, analyzing what users and manufacturers valued most in security transparency and accessibility.

Design Solution

The resulting design focused on clarity, accessibility, and usability. Label One includes two main sections: device information and a detailed breakdown of data practices, featuring graded letter scales (A, B, C, F, N) paired with colours and icons for intuitive understanding. Each grade is explained directly on the label, and a QR code offers users more detailed security information. This label stands out from existing EU and CMU IoT privacy labels by combining clear grading, colour, and iconography to meet diverse accessibility needs. Through this approach, we created a security label that communicates complex information quickly and effectively to all users.
